WONDERS OF BYZANTINE AND OTTOMAN EMPIRE – FULL DAY TOUR – 27 SEPTEMBER 2015, SUNDAY

In Istanbul it is easy to get mesmerized by the sight of countless monuments, churches, mosques and palaces shining the glory of the past empires. During this full day tour, we’ll enjoy both Byzantine and Ottoman attractions of the city. Starting our morning from the heart of the Old City, Sultan Ahmet Centre, we’ll visit Hippodrome Square, Sultanahmet Mosque and Hagia Sofia.

The centre for the wild horse chariot races, Hippodrome Square, was originally built in Roman times and enlarged in Byzantine times. Hearing more about the fascinating history, we’ll also admire the monuments of the Egyptian Obelisk, the Serpentine Column and the Constantine Column.

From Hippodrome Square we’ll continue to Sultanahmet Mosque (Blue Mosque) that was built in the beginning of 17th century across Hagia Sofia. Continuing the tour, we’ll visit the soul of the city, Hagia Sophia, an amazingly beautiful example of the Christian and Islamic elements mixed together. Originally built as a church in Byzantine times and later converted into a mosque by the Ottomans, it is nowadays a museum with a truly unique architecture and atmosphere.

After lunch we’ll explore the magnificent Topkapi Palace with the unique location in the joining point of the Bosporus Strait, Golden Horn and The Sea of Marmara. Built in the middle of the 15th century to this great location, the palace was the administrative centre of the dynasty as well as home for the sultan, his family and servants. Consisting of four courtyards, the palace area has many sections for the visitors to admire, for example kitchen, sultan’s clothes collection, imperial council chamber, holy relics, beautiful pavilions and treasury filled
with jewels.

Last but not least is the Little Hagia Sophia Mosque, that was originally built in the 530 in the Byzantine era as the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus. The resemblance to the Church of Hagia Sofia is obvious with its great dome and same architectural period, thus explaining the name it seems to have taken after being converted into a mosque approximately in 1500. It is a working mosque that has undergone quite extensive restoration work and naturally it is nowadays characterized with the Ottoman –style decoration. Nevertheless, some 6th century elements still remain and the mosque is really an enchanting place to visit.

TOUR 3:
CITY OF TWO CONTINENTS –FULL DAY TOUR – 27 SEPTEMBER 2015, SUNDAY

Istanbul is a magical city without a counterpart and for ages its uniqueness has been noticed around the world. For example Napoleon Bonaparte has once said that if the earth were a single state, Istanbul would be its capital. This inspirational city is a meeting point of cultures and has history that reaches thousands of years backwards. Istanbul is also the only city in the world spread on two continents and on this tour we will take a look at the similarities and differences of the different continents. You will see interesting districts of the city, which might otherwise be left unnoticed and learn about the everyday life of Istanbulites.

The tour will start from the European side of the city. Taksim square and the Istiklal Avenue are maybe the most well known places of the city and often considered as the hearth of Istanbul as life there never stops. However sometimes it is even more interesting to drift astray from the main street of Istiklal and the narrow winding side streets never fail to surprise with their charming ambience. On the European side we will get to know the artistic areas of Çukurcuma and Cihangir.

The fascinating Çukurcuma district is famous for its antique shops and retro boutiques that have impressive collections, especially of toys and Ottoman-style jewellery. Also the bohemian Cihangir is full of boutiques and vintage shops and the area’s cafes and restaurants are full of artists looking for inspiration in the city. Another hidden treasure of Istanbul is the Fransız Sokağı, French Street. The street is like a miniature of Paris with its charming, romantic cafes and restaurants. The old style oil lanterns and well preserved buildings give a blast from the past for everyone passing by this area.

After admiring this seducing and inspiring area of Istanbul, we will also take a look at interesting Karaköy area that was known before as an economical area but it is nowadays the latest upcoming neighbourhood. We will stroll around a little bit sensing the atmosphere and make our way to Karaköy harbour. By taking a short boat trip with a communal ferry towards Asia, we will enjoy the sights of the city from a different point of view. The Asian side of the city is often thought to be older and less developed from European side, but in fact many Istanbulites prefer to live on this side as it is partly more developed and filled with many cosy, wealthy neighbourhoods. It is even a common joke to say that In Istanbul the Europe is in Asia and Asia in Europe.

Our destination in Asian side is lively and liberal Kadiköy district where we will have a small walk, lunch and free time to wander around. Kadiköy is most popular among foreigners and middle class Turks and the area has plenty of trendy cafes, restaurants and boutiques. When experiencing the laid-back atmosphere and walking on the bustling streets of the district, it won’t take long for one to understand why the area is so beloved. Especially the streets of bohem Moda are for many Istanbulites the favourite part of the whole city. Maybe the highlight of the area is the beautiful Sürreyya opera, housing the national opera and ballet. If visiting Kadiköy on Tuesday it is also a must to visit the Kadiköy market which one of the most popular weekly outdoor markets of the city. After admiring and getting to know the Asian side of the city, we will return to the continent where we started from. We will be back at the European side after a communal ferry trip and return to the hotel.

Price: 70 € + (V.A.T. 18%) / pax

TOUR 5:
SPICE BAZAAR AND CRUISE ALONG THE BOSPHORUS STRAIT– HALF DAY MORNING TOUR
29 SEPTEMBER 2015, TUESDAY

tour-5“Life can’t be all that bad, I’d think from time to time.
Whatever happens, I can always take a long walk along the
Bosphorus.”
– Orhan Pamuk –

Starting the tour, we have a fantastic view on the City Walls dating back to 5th century that protected the city of Constantinople and Byzantine Empire throughout many centuries. In 1204, during the Fourth Crusade, the walls had their first breach, the final being the troops and cannons of the Ottoman Empire in 1453.

We’ll also drive by the Golden Horn, the inlet separating the European side of Istanbul into two. As a natural and secure harbour it has had an impontant meaning iIn the development of the city.

Egyptian Spice Bazaar is a fairly small bazaar, but even more full of enticing flavours, smells and colours. There are dozens of shops selling for example fresh spices, dried fruits, lokums (Turkish marmalade also known as Turkish Delights), peanuts and tea. In the surroundings of the vibrant L –shaped bazaar you can find streets full of locals selling and buying everything possible from kitchen equipment to freshly ground coffee.

Istanbul has a unique location in two continents, Europe and Asia. Between the continents flows the beautiful Bosphorus Strait and on a cruise you’ll have a chance to look at the city from a different point of view. Along the way you’ll see amazing examples of past and present as well as shine and modesty. Huge Ottoman palaces and old stone fortresses, yachts and tiny fishing boats, ultra modern new houses next to old wooden ones.

During the cruise we will pass for example the Dolmabahçe Palace, the last palace of the Ottoman sultans from the 19th century. We’ll also admire recently renovated Ortaköy Mosque, which is one of the most beautiful mosques in Istanbul. Moreover between the two bridges crossing the strait lies Rumeli Hisari, a fortress built by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II in the middle of 15th century. The constructions were finished in just four months in preparations of taking over the Constantinople city from the Byzantine Empire.

excursions-14Day 1: You will meet with your guide by the lobby of your hotel at 05:30 to catch the flidht to Antalya Airport at 07:20 am. After arriving in Antalya, a 20 minutes drive to visit Our first stop is Perga now commonly spells Perge which was the capital city of the Pamphylia region, south western Mediterranean coast of Turkey. Today it is a large site of ancient ruins 15km east of Antalya in the coastal line. There is an acropolis located, dating back to the Bronze Age. In Perge you will see city gate, Roman Bath, Column Street, Agora and Stadium. After a short break we will continue to see our second site Aspendos which was an ancient city in Pamphylia, Asia Minor, located about 40 km east of the modern city of Antalya, Turkey. It was situated on the Eurymedon River about 16 km inland from the Mediterranean Sea; it shared a border with, and was hostile to, Side. According to later tradition, the (originally non-Greek) city was founded around 1000 BC by Greeks who may have come from Argos. The wide range of its coinage throughout the ancient world indicates that, in the 5th century BC, Aspendos had become the most important city in Pamphylia. At that time the Eurymedon River was navigable as far as Aspendos, and the city derived great wealth from a trade in salt, oil, and wool. After visiting Aspendos we will go to our open buffet restaurant by the river. Then we will drive to Side antique city, and we will see the splendid Agora, Theatre and Temples built in the seventh century B.C.The great ruins are among the most notable in Asia Minor. They cover a large promontory where a wall and a moat separate it from the mainland. During medieval times, the wall and moat were repaired and the promontory houses a wealth of structures. Before visiting Kursunlu Waterfalls we will have half an hour as free time for shopping in Side. The Kurşunlu Waterfall is a place beside Perge ancient city. There are over 100 bird species living by this natural wonder. The hidden cave at the back of the waterfall is a popular place for visiting. The waterfall is on one of the tributaries of the Aksu River and its situation in the midst of a pine forest is of quite exceptional beauty. The countryside around the water forms a lovely picnic and pleasure spot only twenty minutes from the centre of the city of Antalya. Overnight in Antalya.
Day 2: We will drive a 20 minutes to visit Our first stop is Termessos was built by the Solymians in a strategic position on the shipping route to the Aegean. The Greek historian Arrian said of the locatiıb that ” the two cliffs make a sort of natural gateway so that quite a small force can, by holding the high ground, prevent an enemy from getting through” The city’s formidable natural defences conviced Alexander the Great not to attempt to take the city during the 4th century BC.Termessos is perhaps the most interesting ancient city in Antalya region. It is a Psidian city built at a height of 1050 meters in the Taurus Mountains. Termessos constitutes an unusual synthesis of a large number of rare plants and animal species, which are under protection in the Termessos National Park. When turning off the Antalya-Burdur highway (11 km.) in the direction of Korkuteli, the Termessos signpost will be seen 14 km. further on, and Termessos itself is a further 9 km. A visit to this site requires time and the stamina to walk uphill, because Termessos is built entirely on a mountainous area difficult to access. The inhabitants of Termessos were known as the Solyms but unlike those of other cities of the time they did not come from the sea and were entirely of Anatolian origin. What is known of their history commences principally at the time that Alexander the Great surrounded the city in 333 B.C., which he likened to an eagle’s nest and failed to conquer. Termessos, after a gradual decline, was finally abandoned in the 5th century A.D. Some of the remains found there are the walls, the Hadrian’s triumphal arch, the cisterns, the theater, the gymnasium, the agora, the odeon and the heroon. Among the tombs which are scattered far and wide can be seen those of Alcates, Agatemeros and the Lion decorated sarcophagi, which are extraordinary. Termessos lies in Güllük Dağ National Park, which includes an area for breding wild goats and deer, and may be the last refuge of the Anatolian lynx. The area is also known for its butterflies. After a delicious Lunch we will continue to see Düden Waterfalls are a group of waterfalls in the province of Antalya, Turkey. The waterfall, formed by the Düden River (one of the major rivers in southern Anatolia), is located 12 km north-east of Antalya; which ends, where the limpid waters of the Lower Düden Falls drop off a rocky cliff directly into the Mediterranean Sea in a dazzling show.Afterwards, you drive back to your hotel in Antalya.
excursions-15Day 3: For Antalya it is uncertain when the site of the current city was first inhabited. Attalos II, king of Pergamon, was believed to have founded the city around 150 BC, naming it Attalia and selecting it as a naval base for his powerful fleet. However, excavations in 2008 in the Doğu Garajı district of Antalya have uncovered remains dating to the 3rd century BC, suggesting that the city was founded earlier than previously supposed. After collect all clients we will drive a 20 minutes to visit Our first stop is Kaleiçi, with its narrow cobbled streets of historic Ottoman era houses, is the old center of Antalya. With its hotels, bars, clubs, restaurants, and shopping, it has been restored to retain much of its historical character; its restoration has won the Golden Apple Tourism Prize.Stopping at Hadrian’s Gate, or Hadrianus Gate, or Üçkapılar (last one means “The Three Gates” in Turkish) is a triumphal arch which was built in the name of the Roman emperor Hadrian, who visited Antalya in the year 130. It has three arched gates, the Clock Tower at Kalekapısı, Republic Square with its dramatic statue and excellent views of the Mediterranean coast and the distant Olyimpos Mountains. After Visiting Clock Tower we will visit The Kesik Minare (Broken Minaret) standing in the streets of Kaleiçi (Old Antalya) in Turkey was originally built as a Roman temple in the 2nd century AD. In the 7th century, it was converted into a Byzantine church in honor of the Virgin Mary, but it was heavily damaged in the 8th century during the Arab invasions. In the 10th century it was repaired agai Descending from the square, you explore the narrow, winding streets of historic Old Antalya (Kaleiçi), filled with graceful Ottoman-era houses and gardens. Last stop is the fine Antalya Museum, As a museum exhibiting examples of works, which illuminate the history of the Mediterranean and Pamphylia regions in Anatolia, Antalya Museum is one of the most important of Turkey’s museums. The Museum won the “European Council Special Prize” in 1988 which is somewhat out of the city center and easiest to visit on a tour. The forceful natural waterfalls truly display the fortune bestowed on Turkey with the abundant amounts of water. At nearly every waterfall you can find places to relax and many restaurants where you can refresh yourself. The people of Antalya organize elaborate picnics, at weekends, with grilled foods and drinks and enjoy this time with their friends, family and pets under the shade of the beautiful trees.Afterwards, you drive back to your hotel and will be transfered from your hotel to airport by the time of your flight. In Istanbul you will be met with the driver and transfered to your hotel.
